It's definitely the most recent film that's made me actually really think about what I just watched, which is a good thing for sure. Maybe this is a reflection of how he may truly not be in as much control as the audience and himself think. But yet when things get personal it spirals out of control. I love this aspect, in a way it show's how he seems so calm and calculated with everything he does and what he says, he never slips up.

To continue on your point of his thoughts and his intentions, I feel as the film progressed, so does his good intentions, but also, as his intentions become more good so to speak(ie, how he wants to help Irene with shopping at the beginning, then gradually leads to wanting to help her set herself free from her husbands life of crime) so do the consequences and his actions become more bad(an example being when he wants to help her get away and help her start her live fresh, he stomps a guys face on the elevator, immediately contrasting his good intention of helping her life, to almost completely alienating himself from her).

If you went in expecting lots of action, you did get snippets, but I feel these added to the personality of the driver and his world, not as much for the audience to feel satisfied by some bloody murders, but to learn about his dark side. You're very right about it not being an 'action movie', I think I instantly agree with this tho because I went into watching it not expecting an action movie, I expected the learn more about the mysterious person that is the driver.

Really well put! I just watched the movie for the first time tonight, really enjoyed it, I've been meaning to watch it for ages and wasn't disappointed. Does good/bad even exist? Is the Driver really that much better than a guy like Rose? That, to me, is what the movie is about, not carchases, pretty cinematography or cool music. Does his intentions matter? Maybe, maybe not. There's a saying I've seen tossed around here on reddit a few times "We judge others by their actions, but ourselves by our intentions." We aren't told much of the Driver's intentions, we just see his actions, most of which are pretty terrible. There's no doubt that his mind is racing all the time, trying to figure out what to do now. Then her performs one violent act after the other, all in the name of keeping people safe.Īnd of course, throughout all of this, his thoughts are never revealed to us. He tries to help Standard, using his skills for 'good', to help people, but of course that goes all tits up. When introduced to Bernie Rose, he says his hands are dirty, clearly not only talking literally. Then he meets Irene (I had to look it up too), grows to like her and the kid, the quote above makes him really question his life. We're introduced to him through his phone conversation, where he explains how he 'doesn't hold a gun' and so on, he just drives - he justifies his living by distancing him from the 'real' criminals and bad guys. Is the Driver a good guy or a bad guy? How can you tell? He does some pretty terrible shit, but he does it to keep people he love safe, so that's okay, right? It's a movie about a man and his conscience, at least, that's how I see it. It's not an 'action movie', in that its main mission is not to deliver intense action sequences.

That pretty much sums up the movie for me.Įdit: Okay, so reading through a lot of the comments here, it seems a lot of people completely misunderstand the movie. Overinvested merch is available here.I rewatched it a while ago and a little bit of dialogue really changed the movie for me.ĭriver: Is he a bad guy?
